Dr. Mark Burbey, Orthodontist
Step 1: The day you come in to get your braces off, we will have you take a seat in the chair for Dr. Burbey to take one last look to make sure your smile is as close to perfect as he can make it. Once everything looks as it should, we will begin the process of placing a permanent retainer. Each individual patient is different when it comes to upper and lower permanent retainers but Dr. Burbey typically places a permanent retainer from cuspid to cuspid on the lower arch of each patient. The placement and gluing of this permanent retainer takes a bit of time, as we need to place it correctly in order for you to comfortably bite. The permanent retainer is something that you will easily get used to.
Step 2: Many patients are surprised by how quickly this next step takes. With the help of a few orthodontic tools, a simple squeeze of the brackets and a pull on the bands will remove all of the braces. Blue glue often sticks to the teeth when we remove the bands, so we use another tool to remove this glue as well.
Step 3: Once all the glue from the bands is removed, Dr. Burbey will use the handpiece to remove all of the glue from the front of your teeth. The bur that he uses removes the glue but also polishes the teeth.
Step 4: The glue has been removed and now four impressions are taken for final models of the teeth and for the removable retainers you will be given. You are able to pick out of color for these retainers and even add glitter to them if you wish. Dr. Burbey may finish with a little bit of final shaping, so the teeth are as perfect as can be. A few pictures are taken and then you’re off to show the world your smile!
As always, if you have any further questions about this process or any general questions please don’t be hesitant to ask us at the office.
