placed in the mouth during sports to prevent: chipped or broken teeth, broken brackets, cut lips,
root damage, etc. Burbey Orthodontics offers mouthguards to patients who request them. Our
mouthguards are helpful because they sit directly over the braces and teeth, whereas other
mouthguards are softened to fit securely over the teeth. Dr. Burbey does not want this because
he is working to move your teeth, so with a molded one specific to the alignment of your teeth,
your teeth are unable to move in the directions he would like. If you are in need of a
mouthguard, don’t be afraid to ask!
create more space for teeth that cannot necessarily be done in any other way. This appliance
creates a force that is applied to the teeth to assist in correcting the problem. Headgear usually
consists of three different parts: the facebow, elastics (the force component), and the neck
strap. Patients typically wear these appliances at night and to sleep. The most common
headgear given at Burbey Orthodontics should be worn for at least 12 hours a day but can be
worn as much as possible to create a quicker process for improvement. Every patient is different
but Dr. Burbey typically says headgear is worn for up to a year but can be shorter for some
depending on how much its worn. If you have any questions concerning your headgear or you
need a new appliance, please come see us in the office and we would be more than happy to
explain anything to you!

are meant to keep teeth in the desired positions. It is important to wear these devices, so
unwanted movement of the teeth is controlled. Retainers are given to every patient after their
braces are removed and need to be worn. After a certain amount of time, which varies between
patients, many are able to wear their retainers only during sleeping. Come on into the office If
damage occurs to your retainers or if they are lost. We can make you new retainers in a short
amount of time, in order to prevent any shifting in the teeth without the appliances in place!
